when i was a young boy, my mom used to sing the most annoying song to me.
i've tried to erase the melody from my memory banks, but i can't.
in general it said something about being patient. and still to this day, anytime i am feeling impatient, or i am reminding my kids that they need to just slow down a bit and wait their turn....that STUPID song comes flooding into my head.
seriously....even as i type this i can hear it.
as i was sitting in my office today, i was thinking about how one of my co-workers needed to be a little more patient, guess what i started thinking about.....THAT'S RIGHT....that song that my mom used to sing.
SO....
in honor of my mother and the legacy this song has left on my life...I now present the song to you. my friends. so that it may also plague you and your children forever. you're welcome.
who knew it was on youtube. thank you internet. enjoy!
child of god, lover of sharon, father of 5, future farmer...oh, and i play a little guitar too.

nobody is normal
i know i'm not. do you think you are? if you do...you're wrong. i think normal is like the end of the rainbow. everyone sees it (or at least they thing they do)...thinks it's beautiful and then looks for it. only to find that it's not there...and maybe it didn't even exist in the first place. maybe you saw what you wanted to see regardless of the reality. so if you're looking for normal...STOP! it's not there and it never will be. just grow and enjoy what you have right now. nobody is normal.

make me new

the one that i wish i could change is my ability to get sick. i can really do without it. seriously. allergies, headaches, swine flue...you name it. i'd be glad to be with out it. sharon says that i'm a baby when i'm sick...but i always go to work no matter what. so, i think i'm a survivor. just in case you were wondering....
i was supposed to be writing a surf report today, but i ended up not going....just not feeling it today.
so, maybe tonight i'll curl up with sharon on the couch with a nice cup of hot tea and my favorite show. we'll see....have a great day!
PS...stay tuned for a whirlwind of shenanigans this weekend. sharon is going to a photography workshop with mera and brian like the one last year. should be fun stuff....more later. see ya.

it's just not the same
welcome back! i mean, me....welcome back. thanks!so today i want to talk about vacation as a child vs. vacation as an adult. sharon and i recently stole away a few days with all the kidlets to the mountainous, tree invested sierra nevadas. it was beautiful and quiet and we disconnected for sure. no wi-fi, no cell service, no tv. but one thing that was exactly like home was how much work we did. let me explain. we still had a baby with us. we still had complainy big kids with us. we still had to cook and clean, etc... you get the picture.
i remember vacation being so fun and free when i was a kid....not a care in the world. no school...no chores....just fun! it is a completely different experience as an adult. unless we go to a place with room service and a concierge...and an unlimited money supply...chances are...we're still working.
now don't get me wrong, it's not like we don't enjoy ourselves or our kids...we do...but the days of total complete relaxation are gone...at least for a little while. :-) i'm sure we'll be complaining someday how the kids never call as we bask in the sunshine on the beach sipping fruity drinks with umbrellas. can't win!
have a great day!

'good' friday
is has always puzzled me why today is called good friday. i mean....i get why it's good....but who decided to call it that originally? maybe 'reflection friday' or 'remembrance friday' or 'memorial friday'???? but 'good' friday?
i'm feeling a little half empty right now, so you can read through those glasses. but it seems like much in life has that same contradiction. many of us stay positive for positivity's sake, bur really....life just stinks sometimes.
it's been said that life is a journey...but doesn't it feel sometimes like we've already arrived...and we aren't going to go anywhere else? we showed up at aunt martha's house and we're stuck at the kids table smelling cousin jimmy's farts (you're welcome) while uncle bob is cracking every body up at the adult table because he's had to much to drink. and there we are....stuck.
are the words of the great hanna montana (i can't believe i know this) really true....life's what you make it? or has the hand bean dealt, and our destiny is to sit and wait it out? does it seem like the scenery changes from time to time, but the story remains the same? maybe that's the journey? struggle.
enjoy the easter weekend. spend it with family...with friends. i'm going to try and climb out of my whole...see you on the other side!

yanked from the sweet bliss of sleep

so this is how i woke up this morning. mind you i've been a little under the weather so my reaction is heightened...a bit...i'm just saying.
sharon wakes up to feed the baby. on her way to the bathroom she says, 'ewwwwww, what's that???' apparently the dog had vomited on the carpet in the middle of the night. yum! i bury my face in the pillow hoping to hear the dog vomit fairy walking up the stairs with paper towels and windex in hand. no such luck.
after i was done cleaning the dog vomit, i let the dog out of the bedroom...he rushes down stairs. i close the door and turn on the shower...then i start thinking...'i wonder if the dog needs to go out....he did run down the stairs pretty quickly...' i open our bedroom door and ask our oldest son 'indy' to let the dog out. right after that, our oldest daughter 'MR' says....'ewwwwww....paddy pooped in the kitchen....a lot too!'
EXCELLENT!
i walk down stairs (in my underwear...thank the lord there aren't any pictures. brian is a 'bigger man' than i am) to inspect the dog poop in the kitchen. as i'm leaning over the pile o' stench, getting ready to vomit, 'MR' says....'harley is outside!!!'
ok...our cat...well...sharon's cat 'harley' has had a tiny battle with kitty vertigo and the doc says to keep him inside while he is still all wobbly....
so, i tell 'indy' and 'MR' to GRAB THE CAT! they reply...'but it's raining' (whining). it was drizzling. i calmly and lovingly tell them that i don't care if it's hailing...grab the cat! for some force of nature that i'm unaware of, they are unable to successfully venture the 5 feet from the front door and grab the cat SO, i run up stairs (still in my undees) and throw some clothes on....run down stairs, fire billowing from my dragon nostrils and grab the cat. get the dog back in the house. clean up the dog poop in the kitchen...vomit. then i remember...'my shower!'
once the water hit my dragon flames, they went out. i got dressed and headed to work.
is it legal for that many things to happen all at once, first thing in the morning? i think not! i've got no where to go but up!
less of me...(no joke)

extra money at just the wrong time
doesn't it always seem that way? maybe not. come to think of it....it never seems that way. well, except for today. we just got our tax return in our account last week which is my favorite time of year sans st. patricks day...sharon and i had made a plan for what we were going to do with our extra cash...and no sooner did the thought bubble of glee hover over our heads...did our computer start randomly shutting off. not a good thing when you spend most of every day on it. i don't want to buy a new computer with our tax return! i want to build a deck in the back yard. i do! :-( so, i just got off the phone with apple tech support and they assured me that they can fix the problem if i just bring in my computer to our local apple store. good news is that we bought the apple care extended warranty when we bought our computer and all the repairs will be completely free to us. so, as i write this i realize that this technological inconvenience probably won't affect my back yard plans at all. ahhh....deep breath. (sigh). enjoy the rest of your weekend! see you soon.less of me...

for richer or poorer

my wife just reminded me of one of the vows that we made almost 11 years ago. i'm glad she didn't marry me for my money (snicker). ahhh, here's to the joy of spending money on new glasses at entirely the wrong time....not that there is a right time. but what can you do? i'm still smiling!

sorry
i know i've been really delinquent on my blog. i hate people like me. i've got stuff to say...believe me....but for now i'm going to just going to confess that i have an unhealthy lust for a gibson es-335 in a vintage sunburst finish. it's really tough for me to focus at work...because i want one of these guitars so bad. i've looked at used ones, cheap copy cats, nothing seems to move my gaze from the original. there's no way i can get it...no way. so for now...i'll just have to watch every lifehouse video in existence. maybe i'll start with this one.

the "new me"

i'm feeling pretty uninspired lately....musically speaking. yeah. some of you newer readers may not even know....i'm a musician! :-) that picture above with the guitar....that's me. actually, i recorded and released my very first record in march of 2007. it was a pretty cool process. writing, recording, producing, promoting...for the longest time i thought that record labels where so unnecessary. a big fat waste. but now i get why it takes so many people to promote and bring a record into the market. it's really tough work. especially when you're doing it by yourself....back to my point. it seems like i'm at a stalemate with myself creatively. i have ideas every now and again....but nothing seems to come all the way to completion. i even sat on the porch last weekend with my guitar and my notebook....had a full idea....music, theme....i wrote one line....and after about 30 minutes of nothing, i went back in the house. defeated. several of my friends have tried to encourage me to keep on going. that this is my "calling". that i've got "talent". but honestly...i'm not sure that i'm ever going to make music that's going to really impact people again. if i'm going to be totally honest with you guys, i'm not sure if i ever made an impact. this isn't a cry for compliments. please don't leave a bunch of "you're so great" comments. the only reason i'm even writing this down is because i don't want to post another shallow entry. actually, now that i'm re-reading this (i always do), i'm realizing that this is a pretty boring post and that i'd be tuned out by know if i was reading it....so maybe i'll end here. here's a list of things that HAVE inspired me so far this year. sorry for the self-serving, pity party post.

Just so you know

i hate the heat. I'm a northern california boy and i hate the heat. i prefer the calm breeze under the 78-82 deg. sun. i also hate capitalizing letters. even at the beginning of sentences. see. i especially hate the heat when i'm out in it....doing stuff i'd rather not do....working under pressure that was put on me by others....that they soon deny ever laying on me AFTER (ok some times capitols are ok) i've already lived through it all day long. does that about sum it up? so this is my post. i know it's been a few days....so enjoy it. soak it up.
sometimes at dinner, my wife will have all the kids go around the table and say what the best part of their day was. i think it's a really cute idea. helps the kids to think positive and to learn to articulate their thoughts which i think is super important. she seems to always do this exercise after we've had an argume.....uh....a discussion...and it's really uncomfortable quiet at the table....you know what i'm saying...and she breaks the silence with this exercise. so i never really get to say what my best part of the day was because i'm the last one she'd call on when we've been argu...discussing....but, since this is MY blog (again with the capitalization) i'm going to tell you.
the best part of my day will be later tonight when i get to shlang bbq for my good friend frank kemp of frank t's bbq. the best event bbq'er in the bay area. check him out at www.franktsbbq.com
so that's it. that's what i'm waiting for....i'm waiting for tonight....about 3 hours from now. maybe i'll make it....if the heat doesn't get me first.

Allergies

Allergies SUCK! Seriously. In a about a 7 min. period yesterday, I went from fine, normal, jovial, sniff less....to a drippy, eye watering, head pounding, MESS!!! How is that possible? So, I figured that I'd just take some sudafed which always fixes me right up. Sharon had a different plan. She says that these are allergies, so I should take allergy medicine. But how come allergy medicine never works as good as sudafed. I took it yesterday afternoon and I am still all drippy and watery. AAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
My only consolation is that I'm going to my happy place soon. Hopefully I can kick the drippy's before I get there....
Take care...
