has it been that long?

my oldest daughter turns 8 today. i'm not sure how i feel about that. mary rose is gorgeous, and special, and charming, and stubborn, and flighty...all wrapped into one. she lives your excitement right along with you when you are celebrating...almost like the joy was her own.

she can take the largest, sourest pile of lemons and make them into the sweetest, walk in refrigerator full of lemonade....which frustrates sharon and i at times...especially when we really need her "to get" what we're saying and she is already moving on to greener pastures. that skill will benefit her when she's older. (smile)

she crinkles her nose when she laughs and is pure in her emotions. she feels them real and big and out loud. she is happy. she is confident, but pretends not to be sometimes. she knows what she wants, and she runs...no...sprints after it everyday.

i remember when she was born, i was so afraid to be the father to a little girl. i didn't know what to do. i sensed that my responsibility would be great and that made me fear failure even more. but all of that melted away, the minute i laid eyes on the most beautiful little creature with the largest head of black hair i had ever seen. she was almost born with pig tails. :-) i remember that sharon's labor was only a little over an hour long. surprising and intense...just like mary rose. our little girl was ready to meet us...and she was sprinting towards us...with everything she had.

my little girl is 8 today...and i'm happy. she's everything i could have dreamed of and more. i love you sugar! happy birthday!
