simple

seems easy, right?

WRONG!

regardless of the lack of convolution that we begin with, by the end, it's inevitable that we'll be swimming in a soupy marsh-like waste land of complexity....in just about everything we touch.  do you agree?

i don't know how that happens.  well, i kind of do.  take me for example.  sharon and i got married when i was 21 years old...a baby in the eyes of everyone but my 12 year old.  we lived in a 1 bedroom apartment, no pets, one car, one job, no money....simple....until 6 months later, when sharon comes up to me with tears (happy/sad/scared) in her eyes and said those 2 life changing words....I'M PREGNANT!  enter the next level of complexity.

fast forward to today.  i'm 34.  we have 5 kids, 3 jobs, 2 dogs, 1 cat and a mortgage.  as you can imagine, life has become a we bit more involved for us. now, please don't misunderstand....i'm not complaining by any means.  i am, however stating the truth that our life is NOT a no brainer anymore.  hours of conversation, thought, prayer and stress go into the choices that sharon and i have made together...and we wouldn't have it any other way.  but my question today is, why must we make things more complicated?  what's wrong with simple?

i've often wondered if it's an american thing....more, bigger, faster.  or, is it just a human thing?  what keeps us from simply being content?  career, family, financially, etc...

you could also make the argument that contentment would simply bread apathy and a lack of progress....but i'm not totally sure that more complex always equals greater satisfaction.

as we drift into the holidays like a boat with a broken engine at the pier, i challenge you to think about what you do...and more importantly, why?  do you know your purpose?  and more importantly, does your life reflect it?

food for thought.

i hope you enjoy your christmas with your family or friends.  take care.

You and I must have been sharing a brain when you wrote this out! Like you, I've been thinking about how much has changed - how "complicated" things have become these past 10+ years and what the "real" purpose of it all is. I too have wondered if it is an American thing: a if we're not pushing, we're not progressing mentality. Or, it is that I'm older and just more responsible so I actually take variables into consideration. Maybe it's that I don't want my kids to feel the pressure of life as I do, although I know to some extent this is inevitable as time goes on...I don't know the answer and I'm not complaining because while I am exhausted I am so very thankful for the life I have and the loved ones who share it.

Let me know if you find the answer - until then, I will continue to search as well :-) Happy Holidays to you and your family!
